MEMBERSHIP
The City of Harlingen's Construction Board of Adjustments shall consist of 14 members, seven of which will be regular members and seven of which will be alternate members. The Board shall be composed by individuals with knowledge and experience in the technical codes, such as one professional engineer, one architect, one general contractor, one licensed mechanical contractor, one licensed plumber, one licensed electrician and one citizen. Each appointee shall be at least 18 years old and must be a resident of Harlingen or work or operate a business in Harlingen. The Mayor shall appoint two regular members and two alternate members. Each Commissioner shall appoint one regular member and one alternate member. The Board members shall serve concurrently with the Mayor or Commissioner's term of who appointed such member but in no case shall hold office for a term longer than the term of office of the Mayor or Commission making such appointment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Board shall discuss matters pertaining to the property maintenance of existing residential and non-residential structures. The Board also discusses appeals based on a claim that the true intent of the building codes or the rules legally adopted hereunder have been incorrectly interpreted, the provisions of the codes do not fully apply, or the requirements of the codes are adequately satisfied by other means, or that the strict application of any requirements of the codes would cause an undue hardship.
