Sanitation Operations

The Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department with 50 employees is responsible for the collection of garbage and brush from all residential and commercial areas and transporting it to the City’s Transfer Station. Household garbage is collected twice a week in residential areas and up to six times per week for commercial establishments. Additional services provided by the department are collection of large debris as part of a special pickup service.

Mission Statement

At the City of Harlingen our mission is to collect all municipal solid waste in a fast, efficient, and cost-effective manner, saving time and money, while ensuring a clean and sustainable environment for our community. 

Objectives

  • Collect garbage twice a week in residential areas
  • Provide commercial establishments with garbage collection service up to six times per week.
  • Collect brush from residential areas every 4 to 5 weeks.
  • Divide the collections areas into equal work loads for each crew by route-balancing.
  • Improve the route that a collection vehicle follows as it collects garbage from a specific area in the city.
  • Provide education and training to employees when routing changes are made to ensure orderly process.
  • Initiate a city-wide cleanup program of illegal dumpsites.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE FOR SOLID WASTE COLLECTIONS

COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS:
  
Commercial Restaurant Establishment:  Collection will be made on all holidays.
All other Commercial Establishment: Collection will NOT be made on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS:
 
We will NOT collect trash on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
