Street Maintenance
This division of the Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining city streets in good condition and free of surface failure to a degree that would provide hazardous free travel. Staff performs all street and drainage work necessary to provide for the safety and convenience of the citizens of Harlingen. This department is also responsible for the installation and maintenance of city street signs, traffic control signs, regulatory signs, and pavement markings necessary to provide for good vehicle flow. The division also maintains approximately 250 miles of paved streets, 15 miles of open drain ditches and the accessibility of 52 miles of alleys. Additional responsibilities include the construction of new sidewalks, drainage structures and responding to all weather-related emergency and catastrophic events. Mission Statement
Keep city streets and alleys in the best condition possible to a degree that will provide hazard free travel. Keep drainage systems clear of obstacles to ensure proper drainage. Replace traffic signs when necessary and install new traffic signs when approved by ordinance. Provide assistance to civic and non-profit organizations. Objectives
  • Maintain in good condition approximately 250 miles of city streets
  • Provide accessibility to 52 miles of alleys
  • Keep 15 miles of open ditches clear of debris and obstructions
  • Installation of drainage structures to correct drainage problems
  • Extend the life of city streets by applying a hot mix overlay or seal coat
  • Provide assistance to civic and non-profit organizations
  • Phase-in additional street lights
